Q: What is a Job-Fair? How useful are they?
A: The problem with job-fairs is that they can be very crowded and have really long lines, so be patient even if the line is out the door. You are the gem, the job fair is the setting.
Job fairs are very useful. A company will usually not hold or participate a job-fair unless they have an acute need for candidates.
A job-fair is probably the 2nd best way of landing a job, after personal recommendation based upon networking.
Don't try to squeeze in a job fair into your lunch hour. Block off at least three or four hours minimum.

Bring extra hose just in case you get a run. Avoid onions and garlic for lunch. Look at yourself in the mirror; you don't want lipstick on your teeth or a poppy seed lodged in your teeth. If you are a guy make sure that your fly is closed. Smile and have fun. If you get the job, you will remember the job fair for the rest of your life.
Also be aware that the person in the bathroom stall next door to you or at the ATM machine in the hotel lobby may be a manager or management trainee, so treat everyone with courtesy and respect and don't say anything dumb.
A Job-Fair or Open-House (as it is sometimes called) is like a casting-call for a theatrical production. The idea is to get hundreds of candidates in a room with lots of interviewers and start the interviewing process for as many people as possible. Interviewers are looking for that needle-in-the-haystack. If they are lucky, they will find 2 or 3 "Haystack-Needles" per session.
I've been to these job fairs and it is an exciting thing to watch. Many of my colleagues have been hired out of job fairs.
