Q: What are the pros and cons of working with a recruiter?
A: There are times when it is wise to work with a recruiter. Usually a recruiter is looking for a very specific candidate. If you match the profile that the recruiter is looking for, your search can be expedited. Also, it's smart to work with a recruiter if you have experience in the field.
Your recruiter can do the dirty work for you while you pick and choose what opportunities to pursue. For example, you can say "I want to work in this particular neighborhood, here are my salary requirements, and don't bother me unless you find something that fits the bill."
On the other hand, a recruiter isn't the answer for most job-seekers. Recruiters tend to cherry-pick: they'll harvest 1,000 resumes knowing full well they are only going to place a few easy candidates who are most in demand.

So don't automatically get your hopes up and invest in a new suit and a manicure if a recruiter takes your resume. Also, a recruiter's livelihood depends on getting placement fees, so she has a vested interest in placing candidates.
After you quit your job and sign on the dotted line, you may realize that your new job is not what a recruiter led you to believe. Finally, recruiters will talk to you about your entire compensation package, not just your salary.
They look on the bright side in terms of commission and bonuses and only talk best-case scenarios. They're pumping the sunshine. You have to understand the mindset of recruiters and use them as a resource rather than relying on them too heavily. They can't do magic.
